” We Do Recover and Express our Recovery Through Many Forms Of Artistry “
Our Addiction/Recovery Suggested Reading and Books!
“It is time to shine the spotlight on some wonderful recovery authors, poets and writers like myself here on my recovery blog. Even though I live my life in recovery from ‘compulsive addicted gambling’ and alcohol abuse, I have many passions in life. Some are being a writer myself, an author, blogger, and recovery advocate, and I love to help other authors get their books to readers who will enjoy them!”
We know sharing one’s story of addiction and recovery can be healing, powerful, and help to raise awareness about different types of addictions. It can also help shatter Stigma around those of us who may have made some bad choices in life, and taken a path less traveled by others while deep within addiction, learn we can recover from it, and turn our lives around for the better in recovery, and hopefully help some people along our recovery journey through forms of artistry.
Recovery books, music, poetry, and even other recovery sites are a form of expression and can help educate and inform the public in an artistic way, especially those who may have never been touched by addiction can begin to learn some understanding, gain a wee bit more compassion towards those who do the recovery work to show they can become productive citizens and better people in this world after addiction.
So here are some books, journal aides, memoirs and more I recommend. Because we all know in recovery, any form of recovery help can help us in many, many ways!
“Please, never be afraid to share your thoughts in my comment section as everyone has a VOICE to be heard here”

My Book Review:
“Don’t Expect Delays Reading This Book, Just Sound Advice For Overcoming Trauma!”, April 9, 2017
This review is from: Expect Delays: How to Reclaim Your Life, Light, and Soul After Trauma (Paperback)
I was honored to receive a signed copy of Danielle’s book, what an amazing life she has had thus far. From the dedication page that came from the heart to the very last page, I couldn’t put this book down! I am a childhood sex abuse survivor myself and have been through much therapy, but the professional advice and techniques in this book, many will learn to rebuild their lives from traumatic events into a LIFE of peace and serenity. As trauma victims, we need to begin the journey of healing and come to learn “it wasn’t our fault.” That is when we can start the process of working through all the fear and shame, and begin to rebuild a beautiful life, and some in recovery as I turned to addiction as I was not raised to know help was available and it was “ok” to reach out for it.
Danielle’s book guides you through what is needed to accomplish this and SO much more. At times in her sharing of her life, it feels and reads as if you are “two girlfriends having coffee and just talking about life.” What she has endured, reading it is heartbreaking, but learning about her life today which includes her choice of “profession” to care and help others who have experienced the same path is a testament to the bravery she has, and the hard work she has done to overcome is AMAZING.
I don’t like to spoil a good book, but one of my areas in the book I felt most helpful was “Dangerous Curves Ahead: Caution!” And like her father would say: “if you weren’t tough, you would not still be here.”
That chapter and quote by her father hit me hard as I had turned to addiction when my pain came back from my childhood haunting me and had two failed suicide attempts from all the drama of it and learned I was suffering PTSD. Thankfully GOD stepped in, or I would not be here today.
Danelle’s book will help many and WILL save lives. What an incredible legacy to leave behind! Well written, easy to read and I commend the Author for a book well done. If you know anyone who has been a victimized, has trauma or been through traumatic events? Please share this book with them. I know I will!
I highly suggest this read!

NEW Featured Book Release!
By Dr. Jane Galloway author and writer of ” The Gateways: The Wisdom of 12-Step Spirituality – “Gives you what the 12-steps promise’s us!”
About our Featured Read:
The Gateways are…A Gateway, a Bridge, an Opening into living the Spiritual Life that the Steps promise! What YOU get from this is TOOLS, Inspiration, Time to release the Shame and move into the FREEDOM.
Is there more to recovery than just staying sober and clean? Dr. Jane Galloway offers an emphatic “yes” to this question in her groundbreaking 12 Step companion guide, The Gateways: The Wisdom of 12-Step Spirituality. Galloway presents the 12 Steps squarely in the context of 21st-century spirituality with breadth, skill, and sensitivity that helps readers of any faith (or of none) experience a profound spiritual awakening.
Too many recovery programs fixate on the sickness of addiction and, as a result, trap people in a pathology-centered mindset. Jane Galloway’s strength-based approach suggests “Rather than obsessing on what is ‘wrong’ with a person, learning what is ‘right’ with them may hold the key to understanding.” Incorporating ancient developmental systems like Chinese meridians and the Kabbalah Tree of Life, as well as more recent psychological systems like Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Erik Erikson’s Eight Ages of Man, Gateways presents 12-Step Spirituality as a Wisdom Path. Galloway’s 12 corresponding Gateway Essences unlock the power of the Steps through spiritual practices and rituals that make up a customized, holistic Mind, Body, Spirit toolkit.
As a 30+ year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, ordained pastor and Doctor of Ministry, she is an accomplished stage and screen actor, and community organizer, the Rev. Dr. Jane Galloway brings a woman’s voice to the chorus of men who have previously spoken on 12-Step spirituality. Her work is inspired by and devoted to AA’s founding spiritual vision as it appears in “The Big Book”: “To us, the realm of Spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive; never exclusive or forbidding to those who earnestly seek.” The Gateways opens wider vistas to the deeper wisdom within us all… Visit Jane’s Website here: Jane Galloway, Author.

About The New One:
Relapse Prevention; Long-Term Sobriety. Best-selling author Rev. Dr. Kevin T. Coughlin Ph.D. shares his experience, strength, and hope, as you travel a journey of lessons learned over two decades of recovery and many years working in the industry with him.
This workbook and manual is packed with information that will assist the newcomer as well as the old-timer in recovery. Successful relapse prevention is a process! Learning, developing, and using new skills, attitudes, beliefs, and values that help you to reach your life’s goals and objectives in recovery. Relapse prevention is about committing to a life of recovery and following an action plan to stay clean and sober.
Relapse does not need to happen in recovery from addiction if it does you move forward in recovery. Addiction is a disease and relapse can happen; however, to teach people that relapse is part of recovery, sets them up to fail. Many individuals recover from addiction without ever relapsing, it’s a choice. To use a drug, you must make a decision followed by an action.
Relapse is not a prerequisite! Addicts and alcoholics can get clean and sober the first time that they try and never look back. A relapse does not have to happen. In fact, if an addict or alcoholic works a modality or program of recovery giving 100% effort, they should not ever relapse. Any relapse could end in disaster! Anyone that has the miracle of recovery should do everything in their power not to ever relapse. It could cost them their lives!
Relapse Prevention; Long-Term Sobriety is the author’s eleventh book. This book is dedicated to the author’s long-time friend and mentor John Phelps.
AMAZING New Book: Dragons to Butterflies: The Metamorphosis of a Man
by Author, Johnnie Calloway…
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Johnnie Calloway is a gifted storyteller and has written a superb personal account of his harrowing childhood and adult life. Although he retells his experiences of emotional and physical abuse, neglect, heartache, and betrayal, and later his own addictions and struggles with mental illness, he manages to keep the reader thoroughly engaged and inspired by his strength and wisdom throughout this page-turner.
Johnnie’s willingness to be soul-barrenly honest in this book as he traces his earliest memories into his teens and then adult years is truly unlike anything I have ever read. I have no doubt that his display of courage and his determination to go to any lengths necessary for his own healing will serve as a guiding light for countless readers. It is a story of hope and love, forgiveness and healing. I only wish it had been available when I was a practicing addictions counselor. I would have made it required reading!

*A Film Project All My Recovery and Mental Health Friends and Visitors Should Know about and Support ~ Meet William Dickerson and His Novel and Film ~
No Alternative is William Dickerson’s explosive debut novel that confronts mental illness while blasting open the world of grunge-era teenagers in the early 90’s. It is currently being adapted into a film and is crowdfunding through From The Heart Productions. Please check out the campaign here: https://bitly.com/noalternativefilm.
About The Film & Novel:
NO ALTERNATIVE is a coming-of-age drama that drills a hole into the world of suburban American teenagers in the early 90’s. Thomas Harrison is determined to start his own alternative band, an obsession that blinds him to what’s either the mental collapse or the eruption of musical genius, of his little sister, Bridget. Bridget boldly rejects her brother’s music, and the music of an entire generation of slackers, by taking on the persona of an X-rated gangsta’ rapper named “Bri Da B.” No Alternative probes the lives of rebellious kids who transition into adulthood via the distortion pedals of their lives in an era when the “Sex, Drugs & Rock’n’Roll” ethos was amended to include “Suicide” in its phrase.
About The Author, Filmmaker, Producer:
William Dickerson is an award-winning filmmaker and author. His debut feature film “Detour,” which he wrote and directed, was hailed as an “Underground Hit” by The Village Voice, an “emotional and psychological roller-coaster ride” by The Examiner, and nothing short of “authentic” by The New York Times. He self-released his metafictional satire, “The Mirror,” which opened YoFi Fest’s inaugural film festival in 2013, and recently completed his third feature film, “Don’t Look Back.” His first book, “No Alternative,” was declared, “a sympathetic coming-of-age story deeply embedded in ’90s music” by Kirkus Reviews. His latest book, “DETOUR: Hollywood: How To Direct a Microbudget Film (or any film, for that matter)” is available now.

Author, Kevin T Coughlin ~ “If You Want We Have: A Journey Through The 12-Steps” and “ADDICTIONS: What Parents Need To Know To Survive The Drug Epidemic” Both available on Amazon.com Kindle Store. (ALL E-books are now available in Paperback!)
“If You Want What We Have: A Journey Through the Twelve Steps” By Author, Kevin T Coughlin”
About Kevin’s Book:
“When I was seven years old, I accompanied my mother to many twelve-step meetings and witnessed the miracle as it changed her life and mine.” A few decades later the twelve-steps saved my life, my brother’s life, his wife’s life, my uncle’s life, and countless friend’s lives. After witnessing the power of the twelve-step process my family, friends, and I opened a twelve-step recovery program and retreat in The Poconos of Pennsylvania for adult men and women who suffer from addiction.
Over the past two decades the thousands of miracles that I have witnessed, and lives saved are due to the twelve-step process. New Beginning Ministry in Beach Lake, PA. has been our labor of love, born out of addiction. You can find out more about New Beginning at http://www.newbeginningmin.org. Helping people who suffer from addiction to get their lives back has become my life’s work; I’ve been blessed to be able to work with thousands of individuals and their families over the past few decades.
There is so much wrong information about addiction recovery, and false information about the 12-steps and the different fellowships and programs; the truth is that these programs work and that they save lives! I felt it was my obligation to share what I have learned over the past 47 years about addiction recovery and the twelve-step process. I originally got clean and sober at a twelve-step retreat that was started by one of the Founders of Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill W., it was at this retreat that I started to realize that I had a calling on my life to help other sick and suffering alcoholics and substance abusers.
After two decades of teaching on addiction recovery and the twelve-step process, and developing my skills as a professional writer, it only made sense to combine the two and share this life-saving information with a larger audience. My mom passed on five years ago with over forty years of sobriety, and today I celebrate nineteen years!
My dream is to share my knowledge with as many individuals as I can during my lifetime, building an army of twelve-step professionals who can help save lives.
It doesn’t matter if you are reading this book for yourself, a family member, or a dear friend; the information contained within the pages here can be life changing. I know that these steps changed and saved my life! If you want what we have; a journey through the twelve steps of recovery workbook and manual has been used successfully by numerous individuals, residential recovery programs, out-patient programs, professional recovery coaches, aftercare professionals, counselors, therapists, probation officers, ministries, recovery retreats, sponsors, sober companions, and family members.
“It works if you work it, so work it, you’re worth it!” Anonymous
They say in the rooms of recovery, if you want what we have, and are willing to go to any length to get it, you will recover. All you have to do is want it, and do the footwork. This amazing workbook/ manual will aid you on your journey. Come visit my personal website: Welcome to Kev Rev’s Recovery World I hope you will . . .

After two decades of teaching on addiction recovery, spirituality, and the twelve-step process, and developing my skills as a professional writer, it only made sense to combine the two and share this life-saving information with a larger audience. My mom passed on five years ago with over forty years of sobriety, and today I celebrate nineteen years!

New Book Release Alert! By: Dustin L. John ~ A Walk In His Shoes: One family’s story of their son’s addiction to heroin . . .
About The New Book:
Dustin’s life was once full of joy, happiness, security, and success. With a lucrative job, a wife, and a home of his own, he was destined for a life of fortune, prosperity, and comfort. That was before heroin. This unique and gripping tale is the first of its kind to tell the story of addiction through the eyes of both father and son. Together, Dustin and Dallas shine a blinding light on the dark life of a junky.
As Dustin decides to travel across the western states in search of a safe haven, Dustin wanders within a few footsteps of his own demise. Instead of finding freedom, however, his addiction cascades into corruption, deceit, and evil. As alcohol and drug abuse continues to ravage every community in America, this groundbreaking memoir offers important insight into the inner workings of an active user, as well as the pain of those loved ones who must helplessly stand by as the family structure disintegrates from addiction.
About The Author:
I have fought my addiction to heroin and other mind altering drugs for over 14 years. I knew I wanted a better life for myself but no matter what I tried, I always failed to stay sober. Homeless, jobless, stacks of court fines and warrants, major health problems and a healthy prison sentence hanging over my head, I finally quit fighting. I surrendered myself to my addiction. Through heavy soul-searching and abstinence, I was able to put together a good deal of sobriety.
Joining the rooms of AA/NA, I began to see life through a different set of eyes. I put together almost 3 years of sobriety and thought that I could take back control of my life. I quit going to meetings and working with other addicts/alcoholics. Within 6 months I had relapsed. Full of disappointment, shame and on death’s doorstep, I asked a judge to lock me in jail. I knew it was my only shot at staying alive. Heroin took me to places so petrifying and I was more willing to sit in a cell than continue using. I have had a brief relapse over 3 years ago and I haven’t touched heroin in over 6 years. My sobriety date is February 1, 2012.
Over the last 4 years, my father and I have worked passionately on my story of addiction, homelessness and my families struggle to cope. In October of 2013, my father and I finished the manuscript (with huge amounts of collaboration from the talented Kimberly Flack). My father passed away before ever holding the final product of all our hard work. My autobiography will be published July or August of 2015. It is called “A Walk In His Shoes.”
I want to help other families who are or may be afflicted by addictions powerful grip. Advocating for sober and happy living through mentoring, working with others, meetings, sponsorship, family, virtue and remembering where I came from has been extremely helpful in my own life. Self-knowledge and a clear and honest understanding of my childhood has been vital in my own personal recovery and growth. My past mistakes and triumphs can be used as essential tools for anyone who is dealing with the disease of addiction. Sobriety is possible and there is hope. For myself, it can only happen when I let go of life’s steering wheel and enjoy the ride. I now have my own home in Southern Utah with the most supportive, loving, understanding, and beautiful wife. We have two awesome and very energetic dogs. Neither one of them speak English. Lol.

Author, Marilyn Lancelot’s Newest Release ~ ” DETOUR, Avoiding Temptation”
(Marilyn was responsible for starting Gamblers Anonymous meeting in the Arizona Women’s correctional system).
About The Book:
The dictionary defines the word detour as follows: a roundabout course; one used temporarily instead of the main one. For most commuters, detours are unexpected annoyances. Realizing they will now have to take an out-of-the-way route, one that is probably in poor condition when compared to a major highway, drivers tend to fume and fret over the time they will lose, along with the many other inconveniences involved.
Ironically, substance abuse and addictions often create detours of a far more serious nature, and yet, are frequently welcomed, even eagerly explored! Those in the clutches of addictions are often deluded into believing that a detour is some kind of superhighway to happiness, when, in fact, it only leads to the edge of a steep cliff. For anyone who may currently be traveling on that dark and bumpy road to nowhere, this book is a must-read. It is written with brutal honesty and candor by someone who has taken many detours and teetered on the edge of many cliffs before finding her way back home. Before she found recovery, she was a mess. Today, she considers herself a messenger of freedom. Marilyn Lancelot is the author of the popular autobiography Gripped by Gambling. She lives in Sunny Arizona.
